Maldives Wreck Diving Sites

Aside from being known for its coral reefs with prolific marine activity, the Maldives Islands is also frequented by professional and recreational divers for its unique wreck diving sites. One of the most popular sites for wreck diving in the Maldives is the Victory ship. It is a 88 meter long oceanic freighter, sitting in an upright position at the southern edge near the main airstrip. Wreck diving in the Victory offers sightings of many colorful fishes, as well as a cargo of cement and beer bottles. There are numerous theories on how the Victory sunk, one of which is its captain’s carelessness and inattention. Wreck diving this particular site may also require the diver to be extra cautious as there are extremely jagged seashells and sharp fragments of metal protruding from the wreck.

Another famous place for wreck diving in Maldives is a small inter-island freighter located near the Halaveli Resort Island. Wreck diving in the Halaveli is famously known for its abundant Marble Stingray population. The Halaveli wreck sits on about 80 feet of water, and has only been around for a few years. When diving this Maldivian wreck, do not expect to find prolific coral growth as it would probably take several more years for rich macro life to develop.
